Create a style strategy to help you fit it and stand out
Growing up, I often teased my dad about his corporate wardrobe full of gray, black and brown and swore to him that when I joined the workforce I would not surrender to the sea of what I thought were drab colors and little style. My dad made a pretty strong argument that I could wear whatever I wanted during my free time but that at work I would have to adhere to my employer’s dress code. Despite my push back and teasing, that discussion with my dad really got me thinking (and my eventual career as an image consultant). As I set out to find my first job, I realized that holding onto my brand would be challenging but I was more determined than ever to establish a distinct image that would allow me to both fit in and stand out.
Recently, I had the pleasure to address 200 high and 200 middle school students about how to create, share and manage their image. For 99% of those in the room it was the first time that they heard the term “image” yet they had it in spades and sat anxiously waiting to learn how to channel and harness its power. Interacting with those students taught me that our sense of “specialness” is innate and a gift. Over time we lose a bit of what makes us unique in favor of the status quo. The amazing energy of those students made me even more committed to helping people develop a style strategy. And I am convinced that the results will be more innovate and creative workplaces and individuals that feel more like an important piece to a puzzle instead of a cog on a wheel – a productivity boom!
I encouraged the students to hang on to their unique image and perspective and to immediately launch a personal image campaign. Here are a few of the tips that I shared to help them get started:
-
Take a very unscientific poll. Ask your friends, family members, teachers etc. to tell you what they like about your image and in what areas they think you can improve.
-
Take a personal audit of your closet. Get rid of things that are dated, unflattering and worn. Then, make a list of the key pieces that need to be added to your wardrobe.
-
Select a Style Yoda®. Choose a person that consistently looks great and ask them to share their style secrets. Take what you learn and add your own individual take.
-
Harness your image. My favorite gospel song is called “This Little Light of Mine.” I love it because it encourages us all to let our light shine, not hide it under a barrel. Learn what’s best about your image, how to improve and turn it into a competitive advantage.
- Look like a worthy candidate. It’s true that you never no who you will meet when you step out the door. So take the time to consistently look your best. No baby kissing necessary.
What’s your image story? Do you remember the first time you were introduced to the concept of image? What tips would you share with students? I would love to hear from you.
P.S. Thank you so much to the students in attendance at Walk Aware 2010 for such a warm reception and amazing participation. You rock! You all were a true blessing to me! And the Walk Aware coordination team for making this happen.
